Artist Statement
This is on what and why I do art.
Alex Le
I create art to spark attention, to resonate with people and enlighten a sense of urgency. My body of works combines comic style and collage to commemorate the progress and achievements done by unrecognized communities. My creative process is spontaneous, but driven by movements and our contemporary culture. Each decision I make is guided by experimentation, curiosity, and the desire to express a reaction to our environment.
I’m the type to be “go big or go home.” I pick the materials based on what’s around me and how I’m feeling at the moment. Typically, I stick to acrylic markers because it allows me to explore fantasy and dynamic ideas. I’ve never been someone who sticks strictly to realism; instead, I’m drawn to illustrating worlds that reflect our current one through a comic lens. It’s all about experimenting and trying out new things, new materials. I tend to drift across mixed media and techniques to learn something new.
My work currently centers around comic books and graffiti. After working in digital art and graphic design, my art has shifted to have bold visual language and significance in words. Growing up with cartoons and comics, these bold styles shaped how I see character. To me, this style is tied in with the heroes in the books. My goal is to capture the joy and excitement I felt as a kid and translate that into fresh, engaging artwork. I want my characters to feel alive, as if they’ve stepped out of the pages of a comic or an animated world, but still relate to others. Beyond nostalgia, I aim to push artistic boundaries by experimenting with style, composition, and storytelling. Through my art, I want to challenge myself to push boundaries of not only my skills, but seek the uncomfortable issues in our world.
