For this project, I wanted to do a banner based on the Bad Bunny Superbowl performance and the levis billboard during it that said, "The Only Thing More Powerful Than Hate is Love." For this project, I originally was going to make it on a canvas like I usually do, so Coach's idea of making it like an actual protest banner was out of my comfort zone.
When I was making the banner, it was rough because it was originally a twin size mattress cover. It was so long and kind of a pain to work with. It kept getting wrinkled really easily, which was annoying so I gave up trying to iron it a lot. I give a lot of credit to those that make banner art. With the text, I had wanted to incorporate parts of everyone's culture and everyday life, tying together all sorts of groups and minorities. Like the Bad Bunny Superbowl that showcased the normal life of Latin America, I wanted to show that in my work. However, spraying and writing the text itself was hard. I am not at all used to using spray paint. When I first spray painted it, it was really ugly and you could bareluy see the words.

And then I decided to write with acrylic paint over the spray paint, which made it better to see the words. However, it took way too much space, which is why I was regretting cutting the mattress cover in half (it was so big though). But then, I had the idea of doing a performance piece with it after seeing a video of this guy who had a performance piece, covered in the paint handprints of those who suffered from domestic abuse. I wanted to do the paint handprints thing too, but just of people in general to convey community and togetherness.
However, sadly, we did not have space to do that in the gallery. There was very limited space and the event was pretty crowded anyway so it would be pretty hard to keep the paint from spilling on the ground. Maybe if I continue to do art in the future and do this kind of piece, I will do the idea I had from before. This one wasn't my best piece, but it had good intentions.
